Access to self compassion is intrinsic to a high quality of life.
Self-compassion is the ability to turn understanding, acceptance, and love inward.
So many can naturally extend compassion outward to others, yet find it extremely challenging to do the same inwardly. Research supports that the ability to be self compassionate can decrease mental health concerns such as anxiety and can positively impact relationships and self efficacy.
Additionally self compassion increases:
- Internal peace
- Self worth
Nevertheless, self compassion does not come with a script that supports flawless adoption of behavior change and feeling shifts associated with its practice. However, it is just that: a practice. Just like riding a bike, playing an instrument, or reading a book, self compassion requires consistent and continual attention, energy, and practice. With dedication to its practice, this newfound inward feeling could in fact become easier and more organic.
One easy way to begin understanding what practicing self compassion looks like for you is to complete this simple 10-15 minute journaling exercise. Find a quiet place to sit with the following questions and write what comes to mind to answer to the best of your ability.
- What gets in the way of me being self compassionate is _________________.
- Given the benefits of self compassion, I would like to decrease my tendency to _________________.
- With the practice of self compassion I would like to improve and amplify _________________.
- _________________ would support me in practicing self compassion.
